Dogecoin reddit funded the jamaican bobsled team with about $20k worth of dogecoins (worth maybe one or two times more now?) so they could go for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014

January 20, 2014 It’s Official

Just got off of the phone with Winston and he told me that they got the “official word” this morning from the FIBT, ‘Federation International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing’ aka the ‘International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’ that the Jamaican Bobsled Team has qualified for Sochi.

As I mentioned in the last post, there are several fundraising events going on to get the team to the Winter Olympics. In just a couple of days since the team announced that they were short on cash to pay their way, the out pouring of admiration for the Jamaican bobsledders is very obvious. It’s truly “Cool Runnings 2″

People are helping team Jamaica at ‘Crowdtilt’ where they have already raised over $22,000 and ‘Dogecoin’ which is virtual coins similar to ‘Bitcoins’ (don’t ask me I just report the news here) where they have raised over 20 Million ‘Doge’ not sure how you pay with Dogecoins but hopefully there is an exchange for converting those to “real money”!

I have no idea of how the donations are going here at JamaicanBobsledTeam.com using the PayPal donate button that is on every page but I will try to get an update later today to keep you all posted.

Until then…. We be Jammin…

Dogecoin raises $30,000 for Jamaican bobsleigh team

In the ultimate Internet fairytale, the founders of the meme-based crypto-currency have helped send a two-man bobsleigh team to Sochi 2014.

Such rhythm! So rhyme! Wow — it’s bobsled time. In the ultimate Internet fairytale, the founders of amusing meme-based crypto-currency Dogecoin have raised nearly enough money for a two-man bobsleigh team from Jamaica to go to the Winter Olympics.

After the story of Winston Watts and Marvin Dixon qualifying for Sochi 2014 went viral online — thanks to the Internet’s collective nostalgia for 1993’s “Cool Runnings” — it became clear Jamaica’s first trip to the Winter Games since 2002 might founder for want of funds.

“We need about $40,000 for travel and also to buy new runners for the sled because we can’t go to an Olympics with only one set,” Watts told the BBC.
