If you were extraordinarily lucky or dedicated…
This is the sequel to the 2013 list of the Top Incredibly Valuable Game loot.
This list excludes items that are purchased directly from the Game Developer/Publisher such as virtual game property, moons, space stations, promotional swords etc…, and is focused on items any random person could conceivably win or achieve for themselves through effort, skill and/or luck in the course of playing the game!
10) Dota 2 Pet $2300 (new contender)
The Loot: Late cycle Platinum Baby Roshan “PBR” (Earlier cycles will fetch a higher price)
The Story: After Valve’s misstep in the famous ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give DIRETIDE events that rampaged through Volvo’s social media pages and made it to Forbes, Valve had finally given Diretide in which players raced to take down a sugar rush roshan for the reward of a Platinum Baby Roshan. The first high score in a set time period was cycle 1, and the next cycle 2 and so on. A professional gaming team IG from China took the first one.
(༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give DIRETIDE was when Valve was so busy changing the game system that they decided not to have diretide which was a seasonal game mode, causing a social media backlash from people who actually did wanted it)
The Valve system changes involved crafting and gems, in what has been speculated to be an attempt to cool down heated Dota 2 item markets and has effects you will see later. The Platinum Baby Roshan itself is a sequel to the Golden Baby Roshan, and holds the gems Ionic Vapor and Prismatic: Pristine Platinum. Valve had made the rare parts of the couriers, the colors and the trail effects, separable and tradable.
You can see the video is taking offers from 4500 USD, but it is unsure if it closed.
There was also a crafting bug that allowed certain PBR to escape the ether and be crafted into existence! (the bug) And have been made immortal. Pricing is rather volatile now, and even finding recent market trends is difficult.
In Singapore however, there is a confirming offer of 2300 USD for a Cycle 9 PBR, with further negotiations that may bring it to 2500 (reddit). Further along, another person is taking only bitcoins, skrill or qiwi for a base PBR which probably refers to a gemless PBR or the bugged craft for 2200 USD. (reddit)
9) Diablo 3 Crossbow at $3,500 (Down from 7th place)
aka: The famous game crossbow that bought an engagement ring
The Loot: Manticore Legendary Crossbow at at least 12.375 billion Diablo 3 Gold
The Story behind the loot: “This might upset some people but I found it in A3 MP1, I think in the Tower of the Damned . Waited until town to id all my rares and my two legendaries. One was a crappy Triumvirate, the other the Manticore…I calmly linked in general and asked “Did I just win the lottery?” -shineCDN
You sure did!
(for those who have never played Diablo3) Yup, its like searching underneath your couch or sofa during spring cleaning and finding $3,500 there.
The number crunching:
Where legendary means something. In the december of 2012, this opened quite a few eyes with its high base damage on a 2 socketed dex crossbow, it didn’t hurt to have pretty decent critical hit damage. If that didn’t make any sense at you that is perfectly okay.
Gold prices ranged from $260 to $380 per billion there, with his confirming offer at 11.25 that puts it at $3217.5 at the bottom end and $4702.5 at the top end. A poster priced it at $3500 then so that is the figure we will go with.
8) Team Fortress Loadouts like Hats $5000 (addition)
The Loot: Burning Team Captain, Golden Frying Pan
In Valve’s early forays into monetization of free to play and freemium model microtransactions, hats in Team Fortress quickly gained quite the following. This led to an active trading community as well as a staff economist on the Valve team to explore the economy of Hats.
As the epitome of Hats, save perhaps the untradable ones, comes the extremely valuable Burning Team Captain hat which also happens to be eponymous. It seems to have become canon that its going rate is about 5000 usd, with 4800 cash for it being an easy sell. Although some bemoan the price of TF2 hats having lagged behind Dota 2, there is no denying that $5000 is a pretty good sum for something that can drop out of a box! (and the gem patch had affected Dota 2 item values somewhat)
Don’t understand the fascination with hats? It seems that you could top up a bit more for a Golden Frying Pan
“any enemies killed by it will turn into motionless golden statues of pure Australium instead of ragdolls.”
It was reportedly sold for $5500 USD. Who wouldn’t say no to laying the midas touch upon fallen enemies?
7) Diablo 3 Necklace $8000+ (new contender)
The Loot: Majesty Thrasher, which majestically thrashes Teeming Necklace, was sold for 200 billion diablo 3 gold, which was about $8000 then.
This amulet made waves when it first made its appearance, being really the best amulet in the game. It trounced the heavily duped Teeming Necklace, which was then a best in slot that was sold to a mysterious Chinese buyer who promptly duped it into one of the most common necklaces ever. And a veritable gold mine that probably was for that duper.
Not to take anything away from Majesty Thrasher, what makes this all the more impressive was that it sold in October, after the Auction House was announced to be closing down, and speculation arose that the expansion would be out in 5 months, making all classic Diablo 3 gear obsolete.
But that certainly didn’t stop the eventual buyer from laying the money down, going for 120 billion ($5000) and later sold for 200+Billion. ($8000++)
wolfbash2718- Didnt raiden have it for sale ? That same one for 120b+ …. yep sold to chacha117 for 200b+
And that is quite the depreciation on that awesome necklace, but in an interesting turn of events, if raiden had kept his gold, be it 120B or 200B, it would have tripled in price in the last few days before the Auction House closure at about $6 per 50m instead of $2 per 50m in October.
That would have made it $15,000 to $24,000 which would have put it as the greatest Diablo 3 item sold in history. But the amulet itself would have been near useless, being 2 weeks away from the expansion. It still stands however as the last great Diablo 3 item sold before Auction House closure and the Expansion.
6) Entropia Universe Spaceship at $9,000 (down from 5th)
The Loot: Pirate Mothership revenge for 90,001 PED
Yes you saw space ship and you were thinking Eve Online after their ever recent expensive war. This isn’t though, and this spot on Imaginary Market’s rankings goes to Entropia Universe. Even 2 years ago they were saying the same thing. At this point you are probably thinking, this isn’t the only one. Yeah, 3 of these were sold, for a grand total of about $26,500 to NEVERDIE.
This is from the very same game that makes the news when the game makers sells an asteroid space resort for $635,000, $330,000 for a Crystal Palace station, a moon “Monria” for $150,000. They also sell banking licenses ($99,000 though there are cheaper), and Calypso Land Deeds (like shares that give dividends from the game maker’s profits)
And NEVERDIE has been one of those very people buying and flipping those properties, for rental yields and profits even appearing on Forbes
Forbes-This has got to be the one of the most improbable, half-cocked business schemes out there, but it’s one of those kinds that’s so crazy that, hey, it just might work.
In 2010, the equivalent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Entropia Universe was 428million USD: Mindark
And here is a generic entropia universe screeenshot
Haha, but the next one is the spaceship from Eve Online
5) Eve Online Spaceships at $11,000 (down from 4th)
The Loot: 309 Billion ISK Revenant
The Fate: Went down in a blaze of glory, making record as the most expensive ship lost in Eve Online (for now). From IB times, their valuation of the ship is at $11,118.79. Apparently there are only 3 such ships from the blueprints, and with this destruction it leaves just two in existence behind and 23 minutes of rapid communications as the $11k ship went down.
Like Entropia however, this isn’t the only expensive kind of spaceship in existence. In Eve Online, a banker (in real life) sleeping through a missed payment preceded an epic virtual online war that burned half a million dollars ($500,000) into virtual space scrap.
4) Dota 2 Pet at $13,000 (Down from 3rd)
The Loot: Golden Roshan Baby Season 1 for 5500 keys or $13,000 (different seasons varies)
There’s of course a wide variance, there are some trades and offers here and there. The season 1/cycle 1 series tend to fetch more. At 5500 keys it would be $13,695 if you had bought it from the steam store. Forum offers $10,800 or $10,000 for a season 1 roshan exists however.
The entire spectrum of golden baby roshans can go from $5 k to 13k. The later seasons will go towards the lower end.
The seasons/cycle are simply which rounds the golden roshan was allocated.
It was given out to all 10 players who participated in setting the fastest record of killing Roshan in between each update during the [diretide] event. :Dota2 gamepedia
Generally what happened, and an area of controversy was the use of pudge to to take out the Roshan fast.
From the comments to you can see the going rate is about 5500 keys to 6000keys. One comment says that from the 10, 1 was deleted, leaving only 9 left.
Keys note: While a key can be purchased from Valve/Steam for $2.49, but the street/market value is a bit lower.
Steam has since printed platinum baby roshan that you have seen earlier for the next diretide, but it looked as if it intentionally was meant never to surpass the glorious days of the golden baby roshan.
With the patch changes however, the Golden baby Roshan is now inscribed with the gems Touch of Midas and Midas Gold. It still remains a highly sought after and prized courier.
The effects of the gems have also led to the following very expensive “mashup”
The Loot: Echoing Fury Legendary Mace sold for over 40 billion D3 gold (which was worth a lot then)
The Auction House for Diablo 3 has since closed, and Dota 2’s courier has since overtaken this mace.
The Story: The legend of this famous mace goes that the mace was first picked up by a random person and listed onto the soon to be shut down Real Money Auction House in Diablo 3 for a princely sum of $250. It was then shuffled down to d2jsp to be offered to the highest bidder. Within the bids thread there was a guest cameo by King Konger with 570 users reading that thread at one point.
A player named Hieven was the highest bidder at the end, bidding over 40 billion or about $14,000. (This was in the Euro servers however) From reports it appears that Hieven makes 36k euro a month.
And this was the mace he got.
0.25 Attacks per Second
100% Critical Hit Damage
For those who don’t play D3, this is pretty much the best mace ever dropped, with perfect crit hit damage, a socket, atk per second (that affects the mainhand) and relatively low fear. Though the damage could be a bit higher, its far outweighed by its perfect Critical Hit Damage roll. It is arguably the best echoing fury there even today. It has, in effect, become a gaming legend.
Its like walking into a flea market to buy a $250 artsy artifact, which turns out to be a near perfect condition faberge egg, with gems and precious metals and diamonds. And someone walking in who makes half a million a year sweeping it fabulously out of your hands, showering you with a barrel of cash. And then some more. And a champagne bottle. With truffles.
Everyone is happy, except for the person who had sold it for $250. Others were glad this mighty mace fell into Hieven’s hands and not into dupers (dupers will buy the item at a heavenly price, trade their item to their other accounts and rollback to duplicate it, making many to be sold on 3rd party sites)
2) Dota 2 Pet Flaming Pink Puppy at $38,000 (up from 6th, and perhaps down to 9th in the future)
The Loot: Ethereal Flames Legacy series of Couriers (sometimes Dota 2 cosmetics are traded with keys, other times with cash or bitcoin)
This is by now probably the most famous of Dota 2 items, or THE courier.
In Dota, the couriers/pets can have special effects, and in this case the legacy ethereal flames refer to a discontinued color effect that not only looks cool but is also extremely rare, and to top it off, discontinued. This has lead to incredible prices.
Just last year, this was the ranking excerpt:
Consensus from forums puts it at at least $6000 however so we will go with that. (reddit prices random ethereal flames legacy at $6k-10k, with pinks going to $20 to 50k, edmw concurs with the $6000 base)
How do you find them? You can’t, they no longer drop from the game itself. They are in a sense no longer in production. Do note that ethereal flames still exists, they are just not legacy. So don’t go spending tons of quid on an overpriced courier!
So… at this point, you may be raising your eyebrows at paying $6,000 for a glow effect (but surely you concede its a very cool looking glow effect).
Well, the owner PAADA doesn’t just have 1 $6k pet, he has like a GAZILLION of them.
Nope, not all of them are legacy ethereal flames, but he sure has a lot of them. At this point either your eyebrows have climbed to the top of your head or your jaw has dropped, but wait til you see EDMW‘s evaluation/appraisal of the inventory: starting from $50,000.
That, could buy you a few houses in some countries. Or be a grand political campaign warchest. Or a car. A few cars. Or a jetpack.
How times have changed. Just after the 2013 Imaginary Markets rankings placing it at $6k to $12k, PAADA managed to sell his flaming pink puppy to a mystery chinese buyer for $38000. And, this is a trend here, making it to Forbes.
Oh, and remember the Golden baby Roshan from earlier? See the picture, at the top right?
Yup, PAADA has a golden roshan too. Sure its not a cycle 1, its a cycle 3, but its still a golden baby roshan!
Such riches. Much wow!
At one point, PAADA’s inventory must have had been in the 6 digits, with the collection of legacy ethereal wardogs of varying value he had. And as icing on top the Golden Baby Roshans. That is a jaw dropping sum for virtual purple pixels!
But that was not to be for long, for in Steam’s Diretide patch (believed to be related) resulted in the gemification of legacy effects into a gem. You could now take out the flaming gem and place it into other pets. This reportedly caused the flaming pink puppy to drop 90% overnight from $38,000 to $4000.
Has the mighty fallen? Not quite, PAADA still has many valuable items (now gems) in his arsenal, and the Golden Baby Roshan has retained much of its value.
Diretides come and go, but PAADA can still afford his jetpack. Or fleet of cars.
1) Entropia Universe Egg at $70,000 (maintains position as top dog, or top egg)
The Loot: Atrox Egg at $69,696
This Egg retains its first placing despite a close fight from Dota 2’s Pink Puppy, which jumped a tremendous amount.
The Story: Once upon a time in a universe far far away, there was an Atrox Queen (a dinosaur) who hatched a large egg. A band of desert rangers slayed the Atrox Queen, and the egg went its merry way. It was first sold at public auction to NEVERDIE (yes the guy earlier), who is probably now NEVEREVERNEEDSMONEYHAHAHA. The motherships earlier? His. A banking license? He got one at $90,000. The Asteroid for $635,000? Him too (mortgaging his house), though he parceled it off and sold it to others.
Well the egg was unhatched for almost 4 years, and NEVERDIE sells it off at public auction to Deathifier (who has Treasure Island, his $26,000 investment that has paid off for him and was also on Forbes) Its almost as if they were in helicopters printing out money.
Fast forward to modern days, the egg has finally hatched (baby pigfefftroxes). It has yet to be seen if the prize is worth its price. It appears that new hunting grounds are unlocked: http://www.entropiaplanets.com/threads/feffox-mayhem.9050/But whether its a resounding success or a flop, Deathifier probably has enough cash to shrug it off.
Further Data/More Observations:
While Diablo 3 and Dota 2 have strong showings, neither managed to crack the number 1 spot away from Entropia Universe, and this is a record of about 4 years. What seems to be the atmosphere at Blizzard and Valve is that immensely high prices adversely influence their ability to control their economy, which has lead to cooling measures to take the wind out of soaring prices in Dota 2, and at its extreme the closure of the Auction House in Diablo 3 to focus on the game. (Not to mention that high end trading takes place outside of their controlled markets, which means they do not get a cut)
It is unlikely that we have seen the last of incredible 5 digit item drops, and conceivable that we will see 6 digit items and even multi million objects in the far future. This will probably be accompanied by more juggling and staff economists, perhaps even staff game bankers. One possible way is to link in game currencies with the cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin or Dogecoin so as to have an extrinsic market management.
